Leicester City Manager Claude Puel Addresses Omission of Iheanacho and Slimani in Southampton Clash

Leicester City’s manager, Claude Puel, attributed the omission of Islam Slimani and Kelechi Iheanacho from the matchday squad in their recent encounter against Southampton to the intense competition within the squad. The Foxes secured their fourth consecutive victory in the English Premier League with a commanding 4-1 win at the Saint Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday.

Puel emphasized the tough competition for starting spots, stating, “It was just competition and numbers. All the players deserve game time and to come off the bench. It’s just competition. But it’s important to continue our game.”

The match saw Shinji Okazaki netting a brace, complemented by goals from Riyad Mahrez and Andy King, propelling Leicester City to their seventh triumph of the campaign.

Reflecting on the decision, Puel highlighted the necessity for strategic squad rotations, stating, “We have a good squad with a fantastic spirit. We needed some changes because if we want to keep fresh, then it is important to make some changes.”

Iheanacho, who has made two starts and seven substitute appearances, and Slimani, with one start and eight substitute appearances this season, were believed by Puel to have the potential to contribute positively. Puel affirmed his commitment to providing players with opportunities to showcase different styles, emphasizing the demanding nature of the Premier League.

Leicester City now aims to extend their winning streak to five as they host Crystal Palace at King Power Stadium on Saturday, anticipating another challenging encounter in the competitive Premier League.
