Manchester United legend Edwin Van der Sar backs Calvin Bassey to excel at Ajax

Chief Executive Officer of Ajax Amsterdam, Edwin Van der Sar has thrown his weight behind Super Eagles’ defender, Calvin Bassey to make a significant impact at the club.
Bassey joined the Eredivise champions from Scottish Premiership club, Glasgow Rangers in the summer in a huge money move.
The young defender enjoyed an impressive start to life at the former European champions before his performance nosedived which has drawn criticism from pundits and fans, who believed Bassey is not suitable for the club.
However, the Manchester United’s legend has jumped to the defence of the Nigeria international, asking for more time as he called on the fans not to judge Bassey by ex-Ajax defender, Lisandro Martinez’s qualities.
“I believe Calvin has qualities, but he will have to improve to get to that level,” Van der Sar disclosed.
“That is very logical, and Lisandro Martínez has also had that development with us. Just think about two years ago, when Martínez spent a lot of time on the bench.
“It takes time to grow, it’s not fair to judge Bassey directly on the level of Martínez,” he said.
Bassey has played played 12 games for the Dutch club and scored one goal.
