Nigeria resume Women’s World Cup build-up with four-nation tournament in Mexico

By Monsurah Olatunji
Nigeria senior women’s national team will compete in a four-nation tournament in Mexico next month as part of their build up to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign in Australia and New Zealand later this year.
The nine-time African champions will feature alongside host nation Mexico, two Women’s World Cup campaigners Costa Rica and Colombia, representing the CONCACAF and South America respectively at the summer’s finals.
The four-nation championship also known as ‘Women’s Revelation Cup’ is scheduled to be held from February 12 to 22 in Leon, central Mexican state of Guanajuato.
The Super Falcons’ first match of the tournament is against South American runners-up Colombia, on Wednesday, February 15 before further games against Mexico Saturday, Febuary 18 and Costa Rica Tuesday, Feburary 21, 2023.
Head Coach Randy Waldrum has selected twenty-four players for the tournament, including Barcelona star Asisat Oshoala, China-based star Desire Oparanozie and Leicester City vice captain Ashlieph Plumptre.
After the disappointment of failing to secure a record-extending 10th title at the Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco last year, Waldrum will hope to help the West Africans break the quarterfinal jinx at the global showpiece.
Nigeria will tackle Olympic champions Canada, co-hosts Australia and Republic of Ireland in the group stage of the biggest FIFA Women’s World Cup finals ever, in group B of the tournament that begins on 20th July.
Nigeria is in the elite group of only seven countries that have never failed to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the competition was launched in China 32 years ago.
