Captain of Nigeria’s U-20 national team, Daniel Bameyi, has been nominated for the 2025 CAF Young Player of the Year award.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the nominees for the men’s categories on Wednesday, with Bameyi making the shortlist for the continent’s top youth accolade.

Bameyi led the Flying Eagles to victory at the WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship earlier this year and guided the team to a third-place finish at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — a result that secured Nigeria’s qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

At the global tournament, the two-time World Cup finalists reached the Round of 16, where they were eliminated by Argentina.

The versatile defender’s performances for both club and country have drawn widespread praise, earning him recognition among Africa’s brightest young talents.

Bameyi will compete for the award alongside nine other rising stars across the continent:

Asharaf Tapsoba (Burkina Faso)

Alynho Haidara (Côte d’Ivoire)

Noah Sadiki (DR Congo)

Abdellah Ouazane (Morocco)

Houssam Essadak (Morocco)

Othmane Mamma (Morocco)

Momoh Kamara (Sierra Leone)

Mbekezile Mbokazi (South Africa)

Tylon Smith (South Africa)

The winner will be announced at the CAF Awards Gala later this year, where Bameyi will aim to become the first Nigerian to win the Young Player of the Year award since Victor Osimhen in 2015.
