No players bonuses as FG approves .7m for Nigeria’s Women’s World Cup
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
The Nigeria Football Federation have requested for intervention fund for the participation of the national senior women’s team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and NewZealand.
According to the memo which was made available to nigeriafootball.ng, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has written a letter to the Office of the President about the Women’s World Cup which began on July 20.
The funds were necessary as the Ministry informed the President that the funding for the Women’s World Cup wasn’t captured in the Ministry’s 2023 Appropriation.
With respect to the above, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) submitted a budget for an intervention fund of two million dollars, however the budget was further reviewed down to one million, seven hundred and forty-six thousand, one hundred and eight dollars.
The memo seeks the approval of the sum of one million, seven hundred and forty-six thousand, one hundred and eight dollars to facilitate the smooth and successful participation of the Super Falcons and ensure their morale is at its highest going into the tournament.
The Falcons’ World Cup preparations for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand have been blighted by a reported dispute between the players and NFF officials over their bonuses and allowances.

The nine-time African champions threatened to boycott their opening World Cup match against Canada on July 21 if the NFF reneged on an agreement to split revenue from the tournament.

The preparations of other teams like Canada, England, France, and Spain have also been affected by disputes between players, coaches, and their federations.

However, the Super Falcons shrugged off the bonus row and picked a 0-0 draw against Canada on Friday and hope to get another positive result against co-hosts, Australia on Thursday morning.
