NPFL: Enyimba’s Kalu Nweke reflects on frustrating draw against Rivers United

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Enyimba FC midfielder Kalu Nweke has shared his candid thoughts following his side’s goalless draw with Rivers United in a tense Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture played at the Enyimba International Stadium on Sunday.

The clash, which saw Finidi George and Stanley Eguma face their former clubs as head coaches, lived up to its billing with a high-octane tempo but ended without either side finding the net.

Enyimba Dominate but Fail to Convert

Playing under wet conditions in Aba, Enyimba dominated large spells of possession, with Nweke orchestrating much of the attacking play from midfield. However, despite creating several promising chances, the People’s Elephant failed to make their superiority count.

“It was a highly intense match, and our opponents – Rivers United – are a good side. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but I believe we gave it our all,” Nweke told Enyimbafc.net after the game.

Controversial Decisions and Missed Opportunities

The 30-year-old former Rangers and Abia Warriors midfielder expressed disappointment with the result, citing missed chances and contentious officiating as key factors.

“We even had a goal, and the referee disallowed it. We also had a penalty appeal that wasn’t awarded. But that’s football. The referee has the final say, and we can’t change that,” Nweke lamented.

Despite Enyimba’s dominance, a disallowed goal and penalty calls waved away left players and fans frustrated in a match that many believed should have tilted in favour of the home side.

“We played according to the coach’s instructions. We did our best. Maybe that’s how God wants it,” he added.

Unbeaten Run Intact for Both Teams

While Enyimba were unable to clinch maximum points, the result sees both teams maintain their undefeated start to the NPFL season.

Enyimba remain second on the league table with 13 points from seven matches, trailing early pacesetters Nasarawa United by three points.

Rivers United, meanwhile, continue to build momentum after a slow start to the campaign.

What’s Next for Enyimba?

The nine-time NPFL champions will look to bounce back to winning ways in their next fixture as they aim to reclaim top spot and push for a historic 10th league title.
