NPFL Super 6 MD1 Wrap: Rivers begin title defense with a win as Remo hold Enyimba

Nigeria Premier Football League defending champions Rivers United got their Championship playoffs campaign off to a flying start with a 1-0 win over Sunshine Stars in Lagos on Saturday.

The NPFL Super 6 playoffs that kick started at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena saw the Pride of Rivers claiming the win thanks to Ebube Duru’s second half penalty after Mark Gibson was brought down in Sunshine’s box.

Earlier, Remo Stars staged dramatic comeback to play 2-2 draw with Enyimba FC in the opening match of the day.

After a goalless first half, Adiele Erugo gave Enyimba the lead on the stroke of the hour before former top scorer in the NPFL, Junior Lokosa equalized for Remo Stars in what was his debut outing for the Sky Blues Stars.

Enyimba were gifted a penalty in the 80th minute and was expertly dispatched by match captain, Chukwuemeka Obioma to bring the Peoples Elephants back in front.

Remo Stars won a free kick in a vital area with under two minutes to see out the game and their captain, Nduka Junior wrapped his leg well around it and place it past Bassa Djeri to see the ended with two goals apiece.

In the last match of the opening day, Lobi Stars and Insurance FC could not find the cutting edge in both ways as they settled for a goaless draw at the same venue.

The Benin Arsenals who are still enjoying a brilliant spells in all competitions this season looked the better sides with chances created but Lobi were resolute in defense.

With the win, Rivers United are topping the Super 6 table with three points while Remo Stars, Enyimba, Lobi Stars and Insurance have a point each with only Sunshine Stars failed to secure any point.

The six teams will reconvene on Monday, June 5th for the Matchday Two at the same venue.
