NWFL announces shift in Premiership opening match schedule

By Oyediji Oluwseun Babatunde

The Nigeria Women’s Football (NWFL) has shifted the date of the opening match of the 2023/2024 Premiership season.

The opening match between newly promoted Ekiti Queens and league holders, Delta Queens which was originally slated to hold on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, will now take place a day earlier on Tuesday, November 14.

The decision to move the date is to ensure that key stakeholders, fans, and the football community at large can join in this celebration of women’s football excellence.

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Alhaji Musa Gusau is expected to attend the season opener in Ado Ekiti.

He will be at the season opener to support and encourage women’s football’s continued growth.

The NFF supremo has expressed keen interest in the league’s development and is impressed with the strides made in the repositioning of the Women’s League in a short span of time, by the current board of the NWFL, led by Ms. Nkechi Obi.

Apart from the shift in the date of the star match, other Week One fixtures in the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership will take place as scheduled.

Delta Queens edged Bayelsa Queen 2-1 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, to emerge as the winners of the 2022/2023 league title and represented the country at the 2023 West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League Qualifiers in Benin City.
