Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins has secured the third spot in the player ratings for Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua in the outgoing 2017 season. Despite facing challenges with injuries, Martins demonstrated his prowess by netting seven goals in 13 games.
The top position in the ratings was claimed by Colombian star midfielder Gio Moreno, recognized as Shanghai Shenhua’s best player in 2017. Following closely in second place was another Colombian, Fredy Guarin. Moreno emerged as the club’s leading scorer with an impressive tally of 15 goals from 26 games, while Guarin contributed ten goals in 18 appearances.
Martins showcased his resilience and impact in the Chinese FA Cup final, where Shanghai Shenhua triumphed over Shanghai SIPG FC on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate draw. Despite his injury setbacks, Martins played a pivotal role, scoring in both legs of the final last month. This significant contribution marked the club’s first title win in two decades.
The overall team performance positioned Shanghai Shenhua at the 11th spot in the Chinese Super League last season. As the curtains close on 2017, Martins’ tenacity and goal-scoring prowess have earned him a commendable third-place ranking in the club’s annual player assessments.
