Ogbonda Whyte attempts to end ‘Avram Grant’ trophyless tag with Rivers Angels

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Ogbonda Whyte, the coach of Rivers Angels, is on the brink of a significant achievement in Nigerian women’s football as he prepares his team for the final of the 2024 President Federation Cup.

Despite being a prominent figure in women’s football coaching in Nigeria, Whyte has yet to secure a major title as a head coach.

His journey includes reaching consecutive finals of the President Federation Cup with Ibom Angels in 2017 and 2018, only to lose both to his current team, Rivers Angels.

Additionally, he faced disappointment in the 2019/2020 NWFL Premiership Super Four final, losing narrowly to Rivers Angels again.

Now, with Rivers Angels poised to contest another final, Whyte is determined to break his trophy drought and deliver a win that would not only be a personal triumph but also a gesture of appreciation to the Rivers State government for their substantial investment in the team.

Reflecting on his previous successes as an assistant coach when Rivers Angels won the FA Cup in 2014, Whyte is focused on defeating Naija Ratels FC in the upcoming final to finally claim a major title as a head coach.

His commitment to securing victory highlights his dedication to Rivers Angels and his aspirations to elevate his coaching career to new heights in Nigerian women’s football.
