Nigeria’s legendary defender, Onome Ebi, has officially announced her retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a glittering career that spanned over two decades.
Ebi, who made history as the first African player to feature in six FIFA Women’s World Cups, confirmed the decision on Tuesday with an emotional statement reflecting on her journey in the game.
“Today, I officially retire from professional football.” She posted on her X handle.
“The journey has been filled with challenges, victories, and lessons that shaped me into who I am today. Though I hang up my boots, my purpose in the game continues — to give back, to guide, and to be a voice for players,” she said.
The 42-year-old defender is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest ever footballers, having represented the Super Falcons at multiple World Cups, Olympic Games, and Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournaments.
She lifted several WAFCON titles with Nigeria and also played club football in countries including Sweden, Turkey, Belarus, and China.
Ebi’s retirement marks the close of an illustrious chapter in African women’s football, but the former Falcons captain has pledged to remain actively involved in the game, particularly in mentoring and advocating for the next generation of players.
