Prof Victor Madubuko outlines vision as Anambra prepares to host Nigeria Beach Soccer League Round 2

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nnewi, Anambra State, is set to host Round 2 of the 2025 Nigeria Beach Soccer League (NBSL) from August 21 to 23, marking the second consecutive season the state will stage the event.

Speaking ahead of the kickoff, Prof Victor Madubuko, Chairman of the Anambra Beach Soccer Association, shared his excitement and long-term goals for the sport in the region.

“We are planning a great event in Nnewi. We want to share our rich culture with the visiting teams and keep the spirit of beach soccer alive. We’re looking forward to some exciting matches and a fantastic atmosphere,” Madubuko told www.beachsoccer.ng

The Anambra Beach Soccer Warriors, the only club from the South East in the NBSL, will play host as eight teams continue their quest for the 2025 title.

Reflecting on the journey so far, Madubuko highlighted both the challenges and the passion driving the project.

“We started from scratch, just a group of friends playing informal beach soccer at Moonshine Residence, until we got guidance from the NBSL body to set up a proper team and board. Honestly, it’s been tough financially—we spend a lot each year—but our love for the sport keeps us going. We need more support from corporates and government, but the passion is strong.”

Looking ahead, Madubuko revealed the broader vision of the association.

“Our goal is to develop talented players from our local community who can go on to represent Nigeria. We are also working on setting up a structured state league. For the Anambra Warriors, our ambition is to win the Nigeria Beach Soccer League and one day become the best in the world—just like our inspiration, Kebbi Fishers.”

The hosting will also serve as a cultural showcase, coinciding with the New Yam Festival (Afiaolu), a celebration of harvest deeply rooted in Anambra tradition.

“The hosting is to show the world the rich traditions and culture of Nnewi—the welcoming spirit, the hardworking spirit, and our appreciation to God Almighty for a bountiful harvest,” Madubuko added.

With passion, culture, and football converging, Nnewi promises to deliver a vibrant celebration as beach soccer continues its steady rise in Nigeria.
