Solomon Agbalaka header against Egypt keeps Nigeria U20 World Cup dream alive

By Monsurah Olatunji
Nigeria U20 men’s national team on Wednesday triumphed 1-0 in their second group match against hosts Egypt at the ongoing 2023 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.
After suffering a disappointing start against Senegal, the Flying Eagles got its first win of the tournament thanks to a powerful header from Broadcity FC defender Solomon Agbalaka.
The match witnessed a cagey first half where only one shot on target was recorded before the Young Pharaohs came out smoking in the second half with a frequent wave of attack but goalkeeper Chijioke Aniagboso was up to the task after making at least two point-blank saves.
The hosts are to be punished for their missed chances as left-back Agbalaka met the ball floated from Gombe United’s Aminu Mohammed’s corner kick with a smashing header that made it to the back of the net. Agbalaka eventually got rewarded for his effort with a man of the match award.
The result means that the Egyptians are yet to get a win against Flying Eagles in five meetings with the Nigerians winning all except the 1-1 draw in 2007.
Nigeria have now moved from bottom to second on the table after Senegal defeated Mozambique 3-0 to make it two wins in two games.
Ladan Bosso’s side will advance to the quarterfinals if they avoid a defeat against Mozambique in their last group game.
