Remo Stars thrash US Zilimadjou to take commanding CAF Champions League lead

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, Remo Stars, made a statement in the CAF Champions League on Sunday, cruising past Comoros league winners US Zilimadjou with a 4-0 victory in the first leg of their preliminary round tie.

Playing at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Daniel Ogunmodede’s side struck twice in each half to put themselves firmly in control ahead of Friday’s return fixture at the same venue.

Leonard Ngenge opened the scoring in the 12th minute, before Ebuka Anthony doubled the advantage in first-half stoppage time.

After the break, Malian forward Adama Goita powered home a header to make it 3-0, while substitute Samson Oladipo added the fourth in the 90th minute to seal a comprehensive win.

The result represents Remo Stars’ biggest-ever margin of victory on the continent.

In contrast, the Sky Blue Stars had previously recorded narrow first-leg wins — 1-0 against Medeama (Ghana) and 2-1 over AS FAR (Morocco) — before ultimately exiting at the first hurdle in consecutive seasons.

With this emphatic triumph, Remo Stars now stand on the brink of reaching the second preliminary round for the first time in their history, where a potential clash with South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns awaits if they complete the job against US Zilimadjou.
