Super Eagles arrive safely in Uyo after mid-air emergency forces flight diversion

By Dayo Awoniyi
Nigeria’s senior men national team have safely arrived in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, after enduring a tense 24-hour delay caused by a mid-air emergency aboard their chartered ValueJet aircraft.
The West Africans touched down at 8:05 a.m. on Sunday, much to the relief of officials, fans, and media who had anxiously awaited updates since the initial departure from Polokwane, South Africa.
Shortly after take-off on Saturday, pilots detected a crack on the aircraft’s windscreen, prompting an emergency landing in Luanda, Angola, as a safety precaution.
Swift Response, Safe Resolution
Following the diversion, a replacement aircraft was dispatched from Lagos, in collaboration with ValueJet Airlines, the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to ensure the team’s safe continuation of the journey.
“We are all fine and all is well with the team,” said Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe.
“We’re happy to be back home and can now fully focus on Tuesday’s match against Benin Republic.”
Upon landing in Uyo, the players and officials were immediately transported to their base camp for rest and light recovery, with full training sessions set for Monday.
Focus Shifts to World Cup Qualifier
Despite the travel scare, morale remains high within the camp, and officials have praised the players for their professionalism and composure throughout the ordeal.
The Super Eagles are preparing for a must-win clash against Benin Republic in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup Group C qualifier, scheduled for Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The team is looking to bounce back from a narrow 2-1 victory over Lesotho in Polokwane, and they will be aiming for a convincing performance as they chase top spot and a place at the expanded World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
