Torino’s Slide Continues as Joel Obi Sits Unused in Defeat to Fiorentina

Super Eagles midfielder Joel Obi watched from the bench as Torino suffered a 2-1 Serie A defeat against Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, marking Torino’s fourth consecutive league loss and further dimming their hopes of securing a UEFA Europa League spot.

Obi, an essential figure in the Super Eagles’ World Cup warm-up preparations against Poland and Serbia, remained unused in the match despite making 18 Serie A appearances this season and finding the net five times for Torino.

Fiorentina gained the lead through Jordan Veretout’s goal, answered only in the 86th minute by Andre Belotti’s equalizer for Torino. However, Cyril Thereau secured a late winner from the penalty spot in the 94th minute, sealing Fiorentina’s victory.

Torino’s recent defeat dropped them to the tenth position in the Serie A standings, accruing 36 points from 28 games. Conversely, Fiorentina’s triumph propelled them to the ninth spot, amassing 41 points from an equivalent number of matches.

The consecutive setbacks for Torino highlight their struggle for consistency in the league, intensifying the challenge to secure a coveted UEFA Europa League berth.

Despite Obi’s absence on the field in this encounter, his involvement and contributions throughout the Serie A season have been noteworthy, showcasing his impact within the Torino squad. As the midfielder gears up for international duty with the Super Eagles, his presence and experience remain pivotal assets for Nigeria’s upcoming World Cup warm-up fixtures against Poland and Serbia.
