“A painful pill to swallow”: Nasarawa Amazons’ Mathias on Federation Cup final loss

By Dayo Awoniyi

Captain of Nasarawa Amazons, Josephine Mathias, has described her team’s dramatic defeat in the President Federation Cup final as a “painful pill to swallow” following a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Rivers Angels.

In an emotional post-match interview, Mathias expressed disappointment over the outcome after Nasarawa Amazons squandered a two-goal lead in the final minutes of regulation time.

“We began the game on fire, got two quick goals, controlled the game for a larger part, but lost it at the dying moments,” she said, lamenting the team’s inability to close out the match.

Nasarawa Amazons got off to a flying start with two early goals from Olushola Shobowale, but late strikes from Rivers Angels’ Taiwo Ajibade and Taiwo Afolabi sent the game to penalties.

Rivers Angels eventually secured victory, claiming their 10th Federation Cup title after Esther Adesoji and Ayatsea Hembafan missed from the spot for Nasarawa.

Despite the loss, Mathias praised her teammates’ efforts and thanked fans and supporters.

“I want to apologize to our loving Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, for his unwavering support, to our fans who defied the odds to cheer us on, and to the great people of Nasarawa State,” she said.

Remaining resolute in the face of defeat, the captain pledged that the team would continue to fight. “We will keep fighting and continue to defend the badge that has given us so much,” she added.

The loss marks a disappointing end to Nasarawa Amazons’ cup run, but the team’s strong performance offers hope heading into the next season.
