BREAKING: Real Madrid wrap up LaLiga title ?

Real Madrid clinched the 2021/22 La Liga title today with a 4-0 victory over Espanyol at home.

Los Blancos have led the Spanish table for all but five weeks this season and appeared to be near-certainties to win the title for the most of the season, with Barcelona, Sevilla, and Atletico Madrid all failing in the title battle.

Carlo Ancelotti made many changes to the starting lineup with an eye on Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Manchester City, with Casemiro going in at centre-back to assist Real Madrid’s defensive injury issue.

Rodrygo opened the opener for Real Madrid after 33 minutes, after combining brilliantly with Marcelo down the left flank and gliding inside to hit the far corner of Diego Lopez’s goal.

Rodrygo completed his brace soon before half-time when Mariano Diaz robbed Yangel Herrera of possession and sat Lopez on his backside with another controlled finish, while Marco Asensio scored a third shortly after half-time. Karim Benzema’s substitute goal completed the scoring.

After failing to win La Liga in his first two seasons with Real Madrid, Ancelotti became a three-time champion of Spain. Thus, he became the first manager in history to win each of Europe’s top five leagues – Spain’s La Liga, England’s Premier League, Germany’s Bundesliga, France’s Ligue 1, and his own Italy’s Serie A.

Barcelona dominated La Liga in the 2010s, but the city of Madrid has since won the previous three titles, with Real Madrid triumphing either side of Atletico Madrid’s 2021 triumph.

Real’s 2020 championship was similarly decided behind closed doors and at their Estadio Alfredo di Stefano training facility, meaning that this will be the first league campaign since 2016/17 in which they have emerged triumphant in front of spectators.
