By Monsurah Olatunji
Premier League side Everton has invited Nigerian football legend Daniel Amokachi to a special farewell occasion as they prepare to bid goodbye to their historic Goodison Park stadium.
The stadium, which has been Everton’s home since 1892 and has a seating capacity of 39,414, is set to be demolished after the Toffees play their final match in May. The club will move to their new home, currently under construction at Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool.
The “Farewell to Goodison Festival” planned by the club will include live music along with events featuring the first team squad and past players, including Daniel Amokachi.
The 51-year-old Super Eagles star had a memorable tenure with Everton from 1994 to 1996, during which he won the FA Cup in 1995. He is particularly remembered for his two goals against Tottenham Hotspur in the semifinals and his iconic post-final celebration in a beret.
Amokachi is not the only Nigerian to have worn the Blues jersey. Other notable Nigerian players who have played for Everton include Victor Anichebe, Joseph Yobo, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Hope Akpan, Alex Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman.
The “Farewell to Goodison Festival” will take place from May 30, 2025, to June 1, 2025, featuring three evenings and an afternoon of live music.
According to a letter sent to fans by Everton in the Community’s neighbourhood manager Sarah Atherton, a stage for 20,000 fans could be built to host the three shows in front of the Gwladys Street end.
