Evans Ogenyi frustrated with Rivers United’s poor NPFL form, promises improvement

By Wale Mustapha

Head Coach of Rivers United, Evans Ogenyi is displeased with his team’s display following their 1-1 draw against Kano Pillars on Saturday as he called on the players to step up their game and show more determination.

The Pride of Rivers managed to salvage a point in their Matchday 24 NPFL encounter against Pillars in Port Harcourt, with Sunday Williams netting the equalizer in the second half to deny the visitors a victory secured by Abah Adam’s first-half goal.

Ogenyi voiced his concern about Rivers United’s recent poor form in the league and assured the club’s fans that the team would bounce back in their upcoming matches.

Despite the disappointment, the former Warri Wolves coach appreciated his players’ fighting spirit and acknowledged the need for improvement, especially in home matches.

“It is just unfortunate it ended this way. In the league, no team is a pushover,” Ogenyi concluded in a post-match briefing.
“We psyche our players on the importance of this match to see that we garner these three points to push our position on the log but no team is a pushover.
“You saw the anxiety of my players, the misunderstanding between the two central defenders and goalkeeper against the run of play. I still appreciate them for this fighting spirit at least we dropped only two points.
“We have dropped a lot of points at home, the earlier we start picking points the better for us because in the first three weeks, we will quarter-finals at home and we need to gel.”
Addressing the fans, Ogenyi appealed for patience and assured them that the team would approach every match with utmost seriousness to rectify their shortcomings.
“We need to start making statements on the league. It is quite painful but I want to appeal to our fans to still be patient,” he continued.
“We will take every match very seriously. We are also not happy and we are going to make amends in the next game.”

Rivers United will face Lobi Stars in Lafia on Wednesday, aiming to return to winning ways and revitalize their NPFL campaign.
