Felix Agu ruled out of Werder Bremen fixtures after surgery on ligament injury

Nigeria international and Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu will be sidelined for an extended period after undergoing successful surgery to repair a syndesmosis ligament injury sustained during his side’s 1–0 victory over St. Pauli last week.
The Bundesliga club confirmed the operation was performed on Wednesday and stated that while the procedure went well, Agu’s return timeline remains indefinite.
The 26-year-old left-back had been named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the final rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
However, the injury ruled him out of contention, dealing a blow to both club and country.
Initial medical evaluations suggest Agu could be out for several months, casting doubt over his availability for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Syndesmosis ligament injuries typically require between three and six months of rehabilitation, depending on severity.
Werder Bremen has not provided a specific date for his return but emphasized a cautious approach given the player’s history of injury setbacks. The club is prioritizing long-term fitness over a rushed comeback.
With the Bundesliga’s winter break set to begin in mid-December, Agu is unlikely to feature in any competitive fixtures before the new year, even if his recovery progresses ahead of schedule.
Club medical staff are reportedly working closely with Agu to ensure a full recovery in time for the second half of the season, where his defensive contributions will be critical for Bremen’s campaign.
