Former Nigeria international Mikel Obi has opened up on his transfer saga moment and his eagerness to be unveiled by Chelsea.
The former Super Eagles captain was highly expected to join the Red Devils in 2006 with pictures of him in the shirt already making rounds on the internet but surprisingly, it was Chelsea that unveiled him.
The midfielder joined Chelsea for £16 million and was one of the club’s highest-paid players during his 11-year stay there.
Looking back on his stay at Stamford Bridge, the 35-year-old, who had an illustrious career both at club and international levels has now opened up on his decision making moment.
“It was a massive relief. Obviously, it was going on for almost a year, I couldn’t play for any club because of the whole saga,” he said on his ObiOne Podcast.
“But after that was settled, it was a massive relief for me, and I joined the club I really wanted to play for, which was Chelsea.
“I just couldn’t wait to be unveiled as a Chelsea player, because it was taking such a long time to get settled.
“But after that was done, you know, I was happy to be here. Amazing career. I had won everything there was to win. And my memory here is absolutely fantastic. I would never, never trade it for anything.”
