Mohammed Babaganaru, Technical Adviser of Akwa United, has voiced his frustration following his team’s 1-1 draw against Abia Warriors on Sunday.

Despite dominating much of the game at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa United had to rely on a stoppage-time penalty from Edidiong Ezekiel to secure a share of the points.

The encounter, which was part of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday Two, saw the hosts fail to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities.

Babaganaru was blunt in his criticism of the team’s performance, expressing deep disappointment. “Generally, it was a bad outing for us. It’s a result we didn’t expect, and I’m very disappointed,” he said.

He acknowledged that while his players showed good effort and dominated the game, their inability to convert chances was a significant issue. “From my assessment, my players played very well and we dominated throughout, but we couldn’t convert the many chances we created,” Babaganaru explained.

He further criticized the team’s slow response after Abia Warriors scored early and praised the opponents’ defensive efforts. “Abia Warriors got their goal very early, and they defended very well. We tried to push for the equalizer, and it wasn’t until the last minute of the game that we won that penalty, which Edidiong scored,” he noted.

Babaganaru stressed the importance of improving in the coming matches. “This is the beginning of the season, and we have to hit the ground running by winning games. We have two points from a possible six, and we need to ensure we work on our scoring abilities and redouble our efforts in subsequent games as we aim for a better season ahead.”

Akwa United will look to bounce back when they face Sunshine Stars in Matchday Three of the season this weekend.
