John Fashanu decries spate of match-fixing in Nigeria Premier Football League

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Former England forward of Nigeria descent, John Fashanu is unhappy with the state of match-fixing in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The 2023/2023 NPFL season has been on hold and yet to commence despite last season’s abridged format which was aimed at aligning the league with what is obtainable in Europe.
He says the NPFL Board should be very wary of match-fixing in the league.
“One thing that is coming to Nigeria which I am not happy with is match-fixing,” Fashanu told Brila FM.
“When I hear people say that a match has been fixed, there is a problem. What I would like to see is referees, and linesmen go through proper tests to determine who becomes the referee before games.
“I want to see players who are of good standard playing in the league and not players who brought their way in. It is wrong and we know it happens but we are not solving it.
“I am sorry to say referees give after a shot hit the bar for no reason. This is because the referee has been bought over.”
Fashanu during his playing career played for Norwich City, Miramar Rangers, Crystal Palace, Lincoln City, Millwall, Wimbledon, and Aston Villa. In his eight-year spell at Wimbledon, he won the FA Cup in 1988 and scored over 100 goals in all competitions.
