Kelechi Mejuobi Takes Over as NFRA Acting President Following Zubairu’s Death

Kelechi Mejuobi has officially assumed office as Acting President of the Nigeria Football Referees Association following the death of former president Sani Zubairu.

The announcement was confirmed in a communiqué issued after an emergency virtual meeting of the Association’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and State Executive Committees (SEC) held on March 31, 2026. The meeting described Zubairu’s passing as a major loss to Nigeria’s refereeing community.

In line with NFRA statutes, Mejuobi—previously Deputy President—will complete the tenure of the late president. In his acceptance remarks, he thanked members for their confidence and pledged transparent, diligent, and inclusive leadership while continuing the reform-driven “Rediscover NFRA Agenda.”

Commitment to Continuity and Reform

The NFRA confirmed that all existing appointments under Zubairu’s leadership will remain in place to ensure stability. This includes zonal coordinators, the role of Ibrahim Zailani as Special Adviser, and ongoing work by committees such as the Constitution Review Committee.

Standing committees—including grading and assessment, ethics and discipline, finance, and publications—will also be reactivated to improve operational efficiency.

Strategic Developments and Modernization

As part of broader reforms, the Association plans to expand its revenue base through a newly created Marketing and Sponsorship Committee aimed at attracting corporate partnerships.

Additionally, the NFRA will adopt modern technology, including launching an official website to streamline membership processes, examinations, and overall visibility.

Addressing International Representation

The NEC raised concerns over Nigeria’s absence from elite international officiating, noting that no Nigerian referee has handled major tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations or top FIFA and Confederation of African Football competitions since 2006.

To tackle this, the NFRA will strengthen its Grading and Assessment Committee with experienced personnel to develop pathways for restoring Nigeria’s global officiating presence.

Welfare, Integrity, and Partnerships

Members were urged to prioritize their health amid rising concerns over welfare within the refereeing community, with the Welfare Committee tasked with designing support initiatives.

The Association also reaffirmed its commitment to integrity and professionalism while strengthening collaboration with domestic leagues and the Nigeria Football Federation.

Honouring Zubairu’s Legacy

To honour the late president, the NFRA approved memorial initiatives including the establishment of the “Sani Zubairu Cup” and annual awards recognizing excellence among referees.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to unity, accountability, and the advancement of refereeing standards across Nigeria.
