Leicester City’s Under-21s coach, Steve Beaglehole, has lauded the performance of Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho and other senior players following their commendable 2-1 victory against League One side Scunthorpe in the second round of the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday.
Displaying a formidable lineup that included experienced players like Iheanacho, Yohan Benalouane, Daniel Amartey, and Aleksandre Dragovic, Leicester secured the win with goals from George Thomas and Sam Hughes, while Kevin Van Veen netted Scunthorpe’s lone goal.
Beaglehole expressed his satisfaction, stating, “All the senior players showed a great attitude despite being a little rusty. Ben made two really top-class saves to keep us in it too.” Speaking about the team’s composure, he added, “We showed composure at the end to get over the line, and it’s a tremendous result for us. It keeps our run going and it’s a great achievement by the team.”
Reflecting on the match, Beaglehole emphasized the significance of starting the game well. “Scoring twice in the first 15 minutes gave us a foothold in the game and settled the tempo. We did that brilliantly, it was a great start and good goals from George and Sam.”
However, he acknowledged the team’s missed opportunities, noting, “We should have gone more than two ahead as we were on top, but goals change games, and we saw that.”
Addressing the challenges faced, Beaglehole recognized Scunthorpe’s resilience, saying, “We gave a free-kick away and then switched off. We went in with just a one-goal lead despite dominating the game. Their manager got them going in the second half.”
Leicester’s victory in the Checkatrade Trophy exemplifies the strength and depth of the squad, with senior players contributing significantly to the team’s success in the competition.
