Never will footballers’ wages and allowances be delayed – Labour Party’s Baba-Ahmed

By Monsurah Olatunji

Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has promised that Nigerian sportsmen and women will have no reason to fight for their salaries and allowances if they are elected into office in Feburary 2023.
Baba-Ahmed made this promise during the People’s Townhall meeting, a live event organised by Channels Television on Sunday.
Following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, and earlier inability to go past the quarter-final at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, the Kaduna-born politician assured they will take sports seriously.
“It has pained us a lot during the last World Cup to seat and watch the tournament without Nigeria I would please with Mr. President to ensure that whoever is in charge of the Youth and Sports Development Ministry does the best possible to bring the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to Nigeria,” Bab Ahmed said during the Town Hall meeting.
“There is no way the World Cup will be played without Nigeria, we have passed that stage and it will never happen again. This is entertainment, sports is entertaintment and we are going to proliferate sports, its infrastructure and rewards coming to participants. Never will salaries and allowances be delayed by one hour.
“We would be there to ensure they are compensated, link the with industries, and companies, and raise their profile Internationally. These are part of what we would do,” he concluded.
General elections will be held in Nigeria on 25 February 2023 to elect the President and Vice President and members of the Senate and House of Representatives, with Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is ineligible to run, being term-limited.
