NFF Reveals Rohr’s Interest in Enyeama Amidst World Cup Preparations

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has shed light on the possibility of former national team goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama making a comeback, as Coach Gernot Rohr expresses openness to the idea. Speaking from Krasnodar, Russia, where the Super Eagles are gearing up for a friendly against Argentina, NFF’s Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye, provided insights into the team’s current focus, the recent World Cup qualifiers, and potential inclusions in the squad.
With the Argentina friendly seen as a crucial step in the World Cup preparation, Ibitoye emphasized the importance of testing various player options to strengthen the squad. He addressed concerns about the risks associated with playing such a high-profile game early in the preparation phase, stating, “It offers us the chance to look at options that we have in case of withdrawals ahead of the World Cup owing to injuries or loss of form.”
Regarding potential knowledge exchange with Argentina, Ibitoye dismissed fears, asserting that the draws for the World Cup matchups had not taken place, and both teams would benefit from studying each other. He highlighted the significance of facing a team with Argentina’s pedigree and the world-class talent of Lionel Messi.
Commenting on the contentious refereeing decisions in the recent match against Algeria, Ibitoye acknowledged the referee’s overall competence but noted the error in judgment during the game. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to move past such incidents and focus on upcoming challenges.
Looking ahead, Ibitoye revealed plans for additional high-profile friendly games, exploring the possibility of utilizing the FIFA window in March for another grade one friendly. NFF President Amaju Pinnick’s proposal to shift AFCON qualifiers to accommodate World Cup-bound teams in the March window is under consideration.
Notably, Ibitoye addressed the potential return of Vincent Enyeama to the national team, clarifying that Rohr is receptive to the idea if Enyeama rescinds his retirement decision and proves his fitness and availability for selection. The experienced goalkeeper, with 100 caps for Nigeria, could bring invaluable experience to the team if he decides to make a comeback. The door to the national team remains open for players who demonstrate the required quality and commitment, emphasized Ibitoye.
