NPFL land N6m fine on Kwara United for broadcast breach

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has charged Kwara United for providing false information, resulting in a fixture adjustment that disrupted the live television broadcast schedule of Matchday 31.
Kwara United, based in Ilorin, was charged for breaching Rule C1.1 and B6.23, incurring a total fine of N6m.
The club had requested to shift their game against Akwa United from Saturday to Sunday, April 21, citing a planned government event at the stadium. However, it was found that no such activity was scheduled, and the stadium hosted a lower league fixture instead.
The first charge, detailed in Form 16 of the Summary Jurisdiction notice dated April 22, accused Kwara United of submitting a late application for fixture rearrangement based on false documents, which could discredit the game.
The second charge cited the disruption of live broadcast due to false claims about the stadium’s unavailability, violating Rule B6.23.
As a result, the club was fined N1 million for misconduct and N5 million for the live broadcast disruption.
Kwara United has 48 hours to either accept the decision or contest it before a disciplinary panel, as per Rule C26. Regardless, the fine must be paid within seven working days.
Despite the controversy, Kwara United clinched a 1-0 victory over Akwa United, thanks to Emmanuel Ogbole’s goal in added time. The team currently sits in 12th place with 39 points from 30 games.
