Troost-Ekong responds to Rwanda captain’s comments ahead of World Cup Qualifier

Nigeria’s Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has fired back at Rwanda’s captain, Djihad Bizimana, who expressed confidence in the Amavubi’s ability to neutralize Nigeria’s attacking threat ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday.

Bizimana, speaking at a press conference prior to the match scheduled for Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, dismissed concerns about the Super Eagles’ potent attacking lineup, which includes the likes of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Victor Boniface, Samuel Chukwueze, and Moses Simon.

In response, Troost-Ekong insisted that Nigeria’s attacking strength remains a significant force, stating, “I think we have, maybe, one of the best attacking players in the world, not just in Africa.”

The Super Eagles’ captain emphasized the respect his team has for Rwanda but made it clear that they are well-prepared for the challenge.

“I think every team in Africa is difficult to play against away from home. We respect Rwanda, we prepare for them. So I am happy to hear they believe they can handle our team. If that is their preparation, we’ll see tomorrow in the game,” Troost-Ekong said at the press conference.

The match will be a crucial one for both teams, as Nigeria looks to revive its World Cup qualification hopes after a rocky start to the campaign.

During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Nigeria was held to a 1-1 draw by Rwanda in Kigali before suffering a surprising 2-1 defeat in Uyo.
