Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has set a new continental record after finding the back of the net thrice in country’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers clash against Sao Tome and Principe.
The Napoli striker has been on a record-setting spree over the past 18 months, establishing himself as one of the best strikers on the continent.
With his hat-trick, the 24-year-old finished top scorer of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers with 10 goals.
He already equalled Tunisia’s Issa Jemaa, Algeria’s El Arbi Hillel Soudani, and his compatriot Odion Ighalo, who all scored seven goals in different campaigns.
However, his 10 goals is the most scored by any player in a single AFCON qualifying campaign in the last two decades, according to TransferMarkt.
His goals also catapulted him to the fourth position in the list of the all-time highest goal-scoring Super Eagles’ strikers.
