Botswana President Duma Boko has thrown his full support behind the senior women’s national football team, the Mares, as they gear up for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals, set to take place in Morocco from July 13.
President Boko met with the team on Monday to personally wish them well ahead of their departure. In a spirited address, he urged the players to take to the pitch with pride, unity, and self-belief.
“The best attitude to take into the field is to enjoy yourself,” he said. “It’s about unity, team spirit, and trusting in your ability. Keep believing, and remember the whole country stands firmly behind you.
“You represent the very best of Botswana, both on and off the pitch. Engage with match officials respectfully but assertively, and believe in yourself at all times.”
To motivate the team further, President Boko presented each player with a pair of brand-new sneakers, symbolizing a fresh step toward success. In a show of national solidarity, several companies also contributed toiletry hampers to support the players during their stay in Morocco.
Botswana is placed in Group B alongside African powerhouses Nigeria, Algeria, and Tunisia — all formidable opponents in the competition.
President Boko is expected to arrive in Morocco on Tuesday to lend continued support to the team throughout the tournament.
