Everton’s Onyekuru Optimistic About World Cup Return After Receiving “Love” Amidst Recovery

Nigeria’s rising football sensation, Henry Onyekuru, currently on the road to recovery from a knee injury, is determined to make a triumphant return to the pitch in time for the Super Eagles’ 2018 World Cup campaign. The 20-year-old forward, who sustained the injury in December while playing for Anderlecht, is now under the care of his parent club, Everton, where he expresses gratitude for the unwavering support, affectionately describing it as “love.”
Onyekuru, who joined Everton from Eupen, and was subsequently loaned to Anderlecht for the 2017/18 season, is determined to overcome the setback and contribute to Everton’s season finale. Speaking optimistically about his recovery, he shared, “The people are good people, always friendly and showing care. I feel love and with that love, I will recover even more quickly.”
Originally concerned about missing the World Cup, Onyekuru has set his sights on finishing the season in Belgium before joining the Super Eagles in Russia. Reflecting on the challenges he faced, he admitted, “When I first got injured, the whole picture was quite bad, but fortunately it was not as severe as we first feared… so, hopefully, I will be back and ready to play before the end of the season.”
Confident that his experience at Anderlecht has prepared him for the demands of English football, Onyekuru emphasized the difference between playing for Anderlecht and his previous club, Eupen. With aspirations to play in the Premier League since childhood, he expressed enthusiasm about being part of a club like Everton, where the passion for football is palpable, and he believes the facilities and coaching staff can contribute to his further development.
