Kelechi Nwakali Shines with Brace as Maastricht Secures Victory
In a commanding performance, Nigeria’s Kelechi Nwakali, currently on loan to MVV Maastricht from Arsenal, showcased his talent by netting two crucial goals in their 3-1 triumph against Jong FC Utrecht in the Dutch second division on Friday. Nwakali’s goals, coming in the 23rd and 48th minutes, propelled Maastricht to a convincing victory, bouncing back from their previous defeat to Fortuna Sittard.
The midfielder, who joined Maastricht in January, has made a significant impact, featuring in seven league games and proving instrumental in the team’s midfield dynamics. Attila Yildirim sealed the win with a goal in the 89th minute, while Nick Venema scored the lone goal for Jong FC Utrecht in the 69th minute.
The victory elevates Maastricht to the 12th position in the 20-team league table with 38 points.
Meanwhile, in the German Bundesliga, Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun was notably absent from Mainz’s squad during their 1-0 defeat at home to Schalke 04. Anthony Ujah, another Nigerian talent, started for Mainz but was substituted in the 81st minute.
Mainz’s recent struggles continue, as the defeat marks their third consecutive league game without a win, consisting of two draws and one loss. With 25 points, they currently sit in the 16th position, hovering above the relegation play-off zone in the 18-team league table.
