Nigeria international Ademola Lookman has opened up about his unforgettable experience scoring a hat-trick in Atalanta’s historic Europa League final victory, revealing what his manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, said to him in the immediate aftermath.
The 24-year-old forward made history with his stunning performance, netting all three goals in Atalanta’s dominant 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, securing the club’s first-ever European trophy.
It was a momentous occasion for both Lookman and the Italian side, which had never lifted a piece of European silverware before.
In a recent interview with France Football, Lookman reflected on the significance of that night, recalling the joy and pride he felt after achieving such an incredible feat on a grand stage.
“The feeling of winning and having a medal around your neck is an amazing feeling,” Lookman shared. “And making history in a small place like Bergamo is really special.”
He also revealed the emotional moment when Gasperini, his coach, acknowledged the enormity of his achievement.
“I was shocked when Gasperini told me that I’d become part of football history a few days later,” Lookman admitted. “It’s an honor, but I’ve worked hard to get here.”
Lookman’s historic hat-trick not only secured Atalanta’s place in the club’s history books but also underscored his importance as a key player for Gasperini’s side. The Nigerian forward’s remarkable performance on that stage has since become a defining moment in his career.
