Idah Peterside: Eguavoen’s tactical approach superior to Peseiro’s Eagles tenure

Former international Idah Peterside has expressed his belief that Augustine Eguavoen is a better coach than José Peseiro, who led Nigeria to an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finish during his tenure.
Eguavoen, currently serving as the Technical Director, stepped in as the Super Eagles’ interim coach following Finidi George’s resignation. George’s stint was brief, managing only two matches during the World Cup qualifiers before stepping down.
Previously, Eguavoen served as the interim head coach for the Super Eagles during the 2019 AFCON. Under his leadership, Nigeria finished the group stage unbeaten but was eliminated by Tunisia in the round of 16.
In recent games against Benin Republic and Rwanda, Eguavoen’s performance was notable, securing four points and two clean sheets. Peterside praised Eguavoen’s impact, suggesting that his achievements with the current squad outweigh Peseiro’s tenure with the three-time AFCON winners.
“The team showed more attacking intent and fluidity under Eguavoen,” Peterside said on Channels TV. “We scored three goals against Benin and kept a clean sheet. In Kigali, the goalkeeper was a hero, demonstrating our dominance and attacking prowess.”
Peterside contrasted this with Peseiro’s tenure, noting, “Under Peseiro, the South African coach even commented on how he was surprised by Nigeria’s defensive strategy, especially considering the quality of players like Iwobi, Osimhen, and Lookman. It’s difficult to contain such talented players.”
He concluded, “We have the best set of players in Africa, and Austin has given them the freedom to express themselves. The performances in Uyo and Kigali are proof of this. With continued confidence and development, this team will be unstoppable.”
