“I’m a proud Dutchman”: Emegha declares international allegiance amid Nigeria interest

By Oluwadamilola Olaleye

Emmanuel Emegha has put an emphatic end to speculation over his international future, affirming that his heart lies firmly with the Netherlands despite long-standing interest from Nigeria.

Born to a Togolese father and a Nigerian mother, the 21-year-old forward had multiple national teams vying for his services.

Togo made persistent attempts to lure him with promises of prominence, while Nigeria monitored his development closely, hoping to convince him to switch. But for Emegha, the decision was never in doubt.

“The Netherlands is simply my country. I’m a proud Dutchman and always will be. Even if I weren’t called up, I would still be Dutch,” he said.

The striker, who has battled injuries this season, added that he is fully focused on earning a place in the Dutch squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“I’m going to work towards the World Cup all season. I’ll do anything for that — score more goals, provide more assists, be extremely fit. I’ve had a lot of injuries this season; I want to be in top shape.”

Emegha recently made his senior debut for the Netherlands, a milestone that effectively closes the door on Nigeria’s pursuit and cements his long-term future with the Oranje.
