Super Eagles Defender Benjamin Tanimu Signs Three-Year Deal with Maghreb de Fès

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Nigerian international defender Benjamin Tanimu has completed a move to Moroccan top-tier club Maghreb de Fès, penning a three-year contract that will keep him at the Botola Pro League side until 2028.

The 22-year-old, who was most recently on the books of Crawley Town FC in England’s EFL League Two, joins the North African club as part of their summer reinforcement drive aimed at bolstering their defensive unit ahead of the new season.

A New Challenge in North Africa

Tanimu’s move marks a significant shift in his professional career, as he transitions from English football to one of Africa’s most competitive leagues. Known for his composure on the ball, aerial strength, and tactical intelligence, the center-back is expected to bring solidity and leadership to the Maghreb de Fès backline.

Speaking after the deal was finalized, a club spokesperson expressed confidence in the new signing:

“Benjamin is a talented young defender with experience in European football and international duty with Nigeria. We are excited to welcome him to Maghreb de Fès and look forward to his contributions on and off the pitch.”

Rising Through the Ranks

Tanimu began his football journey in Nigeria, where he quickly caught the attention of scouts thanks to his performances at youth level. His potential earned him a move abroad, eventually landing at Crawley Town, where he gained valuable experience in the English football system. Despite Crawley’s modest league standing, Tanimu impressed with consistent performances, showcasing maturity beyond his years.

His performances did not go unnoticed at the international level either, earning him a call-up to the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior national team. Though yet to cement a regular starting place, he has been widely regarded as one of the promising defensive prospects for the West African nation.

Looking Ahead

The move to Maghreb de Fès offers Tanimu a chance to establish himself as a key figure in a league known for its tactical discipline and passionate fanbase. The Moroccan side, a former CAF Confederation Cup semi-finalist, is looking to bounce back into continental contention, and Tanimu’s signing signals their ambition.

The Nigerian defender is expected to join his new teammates in pre-season training later this month and could make his debut in the opening fixtures of the 2025/26 Botola Pro campaign.
