As reported by Radio Nigeria, the iconic figure in Nigerian football, Peter Rufai, is no longer with us.
Although the family of the former Nigerian goalkeeper has not yet released an official statement, the news of his passing has caused a wave of sorrow throughout the Nigerian football community and beyond.
Tributes have started to flow in for the legendary goalkeeper who was a formidable presence in goal for Nigeria’s senior men’s national team.
Rufai played a pivotal role during Nigeria’s golden era in football. He was the primary goalkeeper during the victorious 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cups—USA 1994 and France 1998.
Known for his leadership qualities, quick reflexes, and charismatic presence, Rufai earned over 60 caps for the national team and is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most esteemed goalkeepers.
In addition to his national team achievements, he enjoyed a successful club career across Europe, playing for teams in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. After hanging up his boots, he continued to contribute to football development and youth mentoring through his Staruf Academy in Lagos.
Affectionately known as Dodomayana—a reference to his noble lineage as the son of a traditional ruler—Rufai was respected for his discipline, professionalism, and his commitment to promoting education among young athletes.
Further information regarding funeral arrangements is anticipated from the family in the near future.
