“You don’t even remember us, 2013 AFCON winners” — Brown Ideye blasts fans

By Monsurah Olatunji
Nigeria international Brown Ideye has expressed his frustration with fans who prioritize building a name over securing financial stability.
His remarks come in the wake of Al Ahli’s reported bid to sign Victor Osimhen, which some fans view as a step down from European football.
Ideye, a former Super Eagles forward who was part of the squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), defended his advice to Osimhen to consider the lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia. He argued that Nigerian football fans often forget the contributions of players who have achieved glory for the nation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ideye criticized the fans’ lack of football knowledge and their short memory regarding past players.
He remarked, “Some of you guys know nothing about football. If not for betting companies, you wouldn’t even know which teams Nigerian players are on.”
He added, “When I see some of our leaders today, I have tears in my eyes. Many of you don’t even remember the names of the players who won the 2013 AFCON.”
