Rangers manager Philippe Clement faces uncertainty over Cyriel Dessers’ future

By Saheed Afolabi

Rangers coach Philippe Clement is grappling with the growing transfer speculation surrounding influential forward Cyriel Dessers. Despite still having a valid contract with the club, Dessers has been linked with a potential move away from Scotland this January.

The uncertainty over Dessers’ future has left Clement in a difficult position, as he faces the challenge of securing a suitable replacement for the Nigerian international if he decides to depart mid-season.

Clement is set to make a decision within the next two weeks, stating that the club would work on finding an agreement that benefits both sides if Dessers remains intent on leaving.

“It’s a difficult question, that one. If Cyriel goes, you need to replace him, and it needs to be at least the same quality. If a player stays and he plays less and becomes unhappy because of that, which I don’t fear with him, it’s also not good for the club. So, we will see in the next two weeks what happens,” Clement said, according to Daily Record.

The experienced manager praised Dessers for his professionalism and leadership qualities, expressing confidence that, whether the forward stays or leaves, he will always give his best for Rangers.

“I know if he’s here, he will give everything for the club. And if he leaves, he needs to be replaced by somebody at least from the same quality,” Clement added.

Although Dessers has had limited minutes this season, Clement acknowledged his striker’s commitment and work ethic, noting that his attitude in training and matches had been exemplary.

The manager pointed out that despite the competition for places, Dessers has continued to push himself and remain ready for opportunities, as seen in his recent hat-trick performance.

“Cyriel is a great character to have in the dressing room, in the team. He always works hard. Of course, he’s not happy if he cannot get more minutes like he had in the past, but that’s football at the highest level.

“It’s a competition, but he kept on working, he kept on fighting. That’s why he’s ready also to play these games and score a hat-trick,” Clement remarked.

The next two weeks are crucial as Rangers weigh their options regarding Dessers’ future. Regardless of the outcome, Clement remains optimistic that Dessers’ passion for the club will continue to be a valuable asset.
