Alex Iwobi recounts 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign under Jose Peseiro’s watch

By Monsurah Olatunji

Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi has shed light on the strategic pivot made by the team’s coaches during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Equatoguineans held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw after netting the opener in the 36th minute, prompting the Super Eagles to reevaluate their approach.
This tactical adjustment to a 5-3-2 formation proved pivotal as Nigeria clinched a 1-0 victory against the Elephants to build their confidence.

Reflecting on the tournament, Iwobi recounts how their opening match against Equatorial Guinea dictated their games approach.

However, it did come with challenges as the players struggled to get the ball out of their half. The Super Eagles progressed to the final but were unable to replicate their earlier triumph, ultimately falling 2-1 to the host nation.
“We thought it was a lucky escape,” Iwobi disclosed, as reported by Fulham FC.
“The manager’s gone a bit defensive, put five at the back. Confidence is high thinking, ‘Yeah this formation sticks, it’ll work.’
“We just couldn’t get out of our half with the ball. It does help when you’re the host. The fans, you’re just seeing orange.”
