Shehu Dikko, the former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) vice president, has shed light on Finidi George’s appointment as the Super Eagles head coach, affirming that it was a well-considered decision.

Finidi’s elevation to the role of Eagles head coach has elicited varied reactions from Nigerians, but key stakeholders have voiced their support for the former international, expressing confidence in his ability to excel in his new position.

Dikko highlighted Finidi’s accomplishments, particularly his leadership in guiding Enyimba to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title last season, as a key factor in securing the job. He also emphasized Finidi’s astute understanding of African football, gained through his experiences in both coaching and playing.

“Fundamentally and professionally, Finidi is an exceptional coach with a composed demeanor. He is eminently qualified to steer the Super Eagles at this juncture, having steered Enyimba to the NPFL title in 2023 and maintaining contention for the title in 2024,” Dikko stated, as quoted by Legit NG.

“He oversaw Enyimba’s participation in numerous CAF inter-club competitions over the past three years and served as the first assistant to Jose Peseiro for 20 months, clinching silver at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Therefore, he possesses a deep understanding of African football.”

Dikko also underscored Finidi’s previous coaching experiences in Europe, spanning various clubs and countries, which further bolster his credentials for the role.

“Furthermore, Finidi’s ascension to the role of Super Eagles coach was not fortuitous but a deliberate progression. His appointment as the first assistant coach to Peseiro 20 months ago was a strategic move aimed at equipping him with the requisite knowledge and experience to prepare for the future.”

At 53 years old, Finidi George, a member of the illustrious 1994 Super Eagles squad that clinched the AFCON title in Tunisia, brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to his coaching role.
