Gift Monday optimistic about NWSL career boosting move

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Gift Monday, a forward for Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, expressed her belief that her recent transfer to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side, Washington Spirit will significantly enhance her international career.

Having joined the Spirit from the Spanish club Costa Adeje Tenerife last month, the 23-year-old has already made an impact by scoring twice in her first three league matches under the guidance of coach Jonatan Giraldez.

Monday emphasized that competing in a challenging league will contribute to her mental and physical development.

In an interview with Sports Boom, she stated, “This move will undoubtedly influence my performance with the Super Falcons. Engaging in such a competitive setting fosters growth in both mental and physical aspects.”

She is eager to make the most of her time at the club, acknowledging that while she has made some improvements in her positioning and finishing during her time in Spain, there is still room for growth.

“My personal objective this season is to gain a deeper understanding of the league, my teammates, and to ensure they comprehend my style of play as well,’ she remarked.

“It is essential to cultivate that mutual understanding. I aim to leverage my skills and contribute to the team’s success, particularly in offensive situations.”

Her move to the NWSL also aligns with her ambitions for Nigeria. With international competitions on the horizon, she’s hopeful her NWSL form will translate to national success.
