“Knowing your worth isn’t arrogance” — Mikel backs Osimhen in Finidi George case

By Monsurah Olatunji
Former international Mikel Obi has taken a subtle jab at Finidi George while defending Victor Osimhen’s recent outburst against the former Super Eagles manager.
Osimhen voiced his frustration on Instagram, expressing his loss of respect for George after an unverified report suggested that George had undermined him in an interview with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Despite criticism from fans and former players regarding Osimhen’s response, Mikel Obi believes the striker’s reaction was rooted in feeling unsupported, particularly in light of the Super Eagles’ disappointing performances against South Africa and Benin Republic under George’s tenure.
“Whenever I speak with him, he’s always humble and respectful,” Mikel said on the Obionepodcast. “Respect is mutual—if I respect you, I expect the same in return.”
He continued, “Osimhen mentioned that he had a conversation with the manager, which was recorded, but felt that the manager threw him under the bus.
“He was understandably upset and chose to defend himself. Perhaps the manner in which he did it wasn’t ideal, but he had every right to speak out.”
Mikel added, “I hold nothing against Victor for his actions. Knowing your worth and standing up for yourself isn’t the same as being arrogant.”
