Maduka Okoye on a mission to regain Super Eagles number 1 spot

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria international, Maduka Okoya has revealed his intention to displace Stanley Nwabali and reclaim his spot as Super Eagles number one goalkeeper.

The Udinese safe hands saw his spot threatened following his goalkeeping error that cost Nigeria at the 2021 AFCON tournament in Cameroon.

Since then, he has not been featured for the Super Eagles in any major tournament and was left out of the squad until the last World Cup qualifying games.

After nearly a year away from international competition, the handsome goalkeeper returned to the Super Eagles last month as an unused substitution in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier matches.

The 24-year-old is currently playing second fiddle to Nwabali who impressed in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

Howerver, when quizzed about his desire to make a statement return for the team, the shot stopper didn’t hide his intentions in his response, which indicated that he is ready to displace Nwabali as first choice shot stopper.

“Obviously I would like to wear the national team jersey again,” told Tuttomercatoweb.

Okoye had an impressive season with his club side Udinese, playing 25 games and keeping 5 clean sheets.
