NPFL: Baba Abubakar recounts fans’ support as key to Sunshine Stars’ success

By Wale Mustapha

Sunshine Stars head coach Baba Abubakar has emphasized the crucial role of fan support in achieving positive results for his team, as they battle to retain their spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Abubakar, who is tasked with steering the Owena Whales clear of relegation, believes that playing without the backing of supporters significantly hampers a team’s performance, particularly in home fixtures.

Due to ongoing renovations at their Akure Township Stadium, Sunshine Stars have been forced to play their home games at neutral grounds this season. Initially using the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode, the team later settled on the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne for their remaining home matches.

Despite these challenges, Abubakar is urging fans to continue supporting the team in large numbers, stressing that their presence could be the key to overcoming the obstacles they face in the league.

“Playing away from home takes away a significant advantage, approximately 70 percent,” Abubakar told Owosports.

“In the Nigerian League, playing without fans’ support is a huge disadvantage. However, we are committed to working hard to overcome these challenges and avoid relegation.”

Sunshine Stars will face Insurance FC in their next NPFL outing on Sunday in Benin, with Abubakar hopeful that his team can build on their supporters’ backing to secure a crucial win.
