Remo Stars record historic win over Rivers United to close gap on leaders Rangers

Remo Stars recorded a win over Rivers United in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for the first time in the club’s history following a 2-1 win on Monday evening.

The previous encounters between both sides have seen the Pride of Rivers recording six victories with two draws.

Their first win didn’t come easy as former player, Andy Okpe put the visits ahead from the penalty spot in the 19th minute at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne.

The visitors’ shock lead lingered till the 68th minute when Hadi Haruna restored parity.

With seven minutes left on the clock, Kwame Mawena scored the winning goal for the Sky Blue Stars.

The win moved Remo Stars to the second position with 56 points after 32 games, a point behind leaders, Enugu Rangers.

With four games in hand, Rivers United remained in the 13th position with 40 points after 28 games.

The Pride of Rivers will next square up with Kwara United in another away outstanding match scheduled for Kwara Sports Complex on May 9, 2024.
