The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly on the verge of announcing the return of Otto Addo, Borussia Dortmund’s talent coach, as the new head coach of the Black Stars, ahead of their friendly clash with the Super Eagles.
Since their premature exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, the Ghanaian men’s senior football team has been without a coach. However, according to reports from Ghanaian sports outlet Football Ghana, the GFA has extended an offer to Addo for a long-term contract to fill the coaching void. An official announcement is expected to be made on Friday, March 15, 2024.
During his previous stint as Black Stars coach, Addo led the team in 12 games, securing four wins, four draws, and suffering four defeats. Notably, he guided Ghana through the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they managed to secure one victory in the group stage against South Korea, while facing losses against Portugal and Uruguay.
Despite Addo’s previous tenure, it was Chris Hughton who was at the helm during the AFCON, where Ghana struggled to make an impact, failing to secure a single victory in the group stage.
Addo’s potential appointment comes amidst managerial changes at Borussia Dortmund, with Marco Rose being replaced by Terzic, resulting in Addo reverting to his role as a talent coach.
If confirmed, Addo’s immediate task will be to prepare the Black Stars for upcoming international friendlies against Uganda and Nigeria scheduled to take place in Marrakech, Morocco, in March 2024.
