Nigerian striker Joseph Akpala showcased his scoring prowess for Oostende, finding the net in their compelling 3-3 away draw against 10-man Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Europa League qualifying play-offs Group B tie on Monday. The encounter marked the inaugural match for both teams in the six-team play-offs, featuring Eupen, Lokeren, KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk, and St. Truiden.

Akpala’s impact was felt in the 28th minute as he opened the scoring, putting Oostende in the lead. However, Royal Antwerp responded with determination, leveling the score at 1-1 through Laurent Mendy’s converted penalty in the 36th minute.

Oostende regained the lead with Richairo Zivkovic finding the net in the 52nd minute, only to be matched by Joaquin Ardaiz, who equalized for Royal Antwerp on the 55th minute. The seesaw battle continued as William Owusu gave Royal Antwerp a 3-2 lead just five minutes after Ardaiz’s goal.

Royal Antwerp’s hopes took a hit when Nader Ghandri received a red card in the 71st minute, reducing them to 10 men. Oostende capitalized on the numerical advantage, equalizing on the 88th minute courtesy of Zinho Gano.

With both teams leaving everything on the pitch, the thrilling draw sets the stage for Oostende’s upcoming home fixture against Eupen on Saturday. Akpala’s standout performance adds to the anticipation surrounding Oostende’s pursuit of success in the Belgian Europa League qualifying play-offs.
